Early Scouting? Why not!

Every year it seems that I start scouting a little earlier than the year before. The excitement from last year, along with new hunting goodies that Santa brings, get me all excited to be back out in the woods scouting for elk!
An early scout can be as simple as a UTV ride up to last years camp or sitting on a ridge glassing hills and having lunch. I prefer to hunt in thick forests of pine and fir where you don’t get many distance shots. I tell myself that it keeps the rifle hunters out? Hunting in the thick of things used to be daunting when it came to scouting, it was difficult to do without pushing animals around, but the invention of the trail cam has fixed that!
I never thought that electronics and hunting went well together. In the past, I never packed a GPS, never had electronic calls, and scoffed at walkie-talkies. Now I hate to leave my truck without my cell phone and its Trimble GPS Hunt app! A few years back my soon-to-be son in-law gave me a trail cam for Christmas and it has changed my scouting dramatically.
I remember practicing with it in the back yard shooting night pictures of the cat. It captured photos of everyone who walked by the street lamp for an entire day. Once, I accidentally left it on in the truck and the camera saved pictures of various parts of me getting in and out (great pics by the way). It wasn't long before I felt comfortable with it and we went to the woods in search of game!
Here are some of my photos from my early scounting this spring. Hey, I did wait till Turkey season before I set up….it was a long wait, but well worth it!
Remember...it's never a bad time to be in the woods!
Enjoy!
